As I sit here on Christmas Eve, I can only look back on 2008 with extreme pride, Talisman the Band (Crys, Steve, Jim and I) released "The Wicked World's Come of Age". A collection of songs
that represent just about every emotion; Love, Hate, Pain, Anguish, Desire, and Loss.
I believe we captured these emotions quite well in how we painstakingly recorded and mixed
the album with the help of Pete Davis at Signal Sound. I think I can speak for all of us when I say that the album far exceeded all of our expectations.
On Aug 31st, 2008 we performed our first gig in 14 years at John and Peter's in New Hope to
a packed house. It was absolutely thrilling; we performed almost flawlessly (at least Crys, Steve, and Jim did) and the energy in the crowd was electric.
Our goal in 2009 is to get our music out to as many people as possible, and to continually improve our playing as a band, as we feel that we are not quite the "well oiled machine" that
we need to be (we are our own worst critics). Crys has been tirelessly "pounding the pavement" lately, playing acoustically 2-3 times a week at various open mics in the area, making connections and creating a "buzz". You go Girl!!! Anyway, I think it's working, let's keep our fingers crossed.
Our next gig is Thursday, Feb 5 at Puck in Doylestown. Hope to see you there!!
Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays to all!!

Happy Winter Solstice (and other holidays) and a brief year in review...
Greetings All!
The winter solstice (12/21) marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. The sun appears at its lowest point in the sky, and its noontime elevation appears to be the same for several days before and after the solstice.
Hence the origin of the word solstice, which comes from Latin solstitium, from sol, “sun” and -stitium, “a stoppage.” Following the winter solstice, the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter. For more info on Winter Solstice, click HERE.
Why all the mystical hub-bub? Well, a solstice marks a season of change. It's the awakening of a new season and the closure of another. That's very much what it feels like for Talisman. We have had a terrific 2008. It marked our official reunion, the completion & release of The Wicked World's Come of Age, old songs, new songs, a great newspaper article in the Northeast Times and a great road map for 2009. Already some very neat things are on the horizon (more details to come on that ;-) and though 2008 was really great, 2009 will be divine (We really can't help ourselves).
We hope to see everyone for a festive outing tomorrow at Espresso Yourself at 6441 Frankford Ave Philadelphia, PA 19135 (215) 333-1212 starting at 8pm. Lead singer chick C will be playing selections from the CD and some other favorites. So bring your ears and your appetite - there are terrific sandwiches (the wraps are favorites along with the veggie grilled cheese) and goodies (cookies, cakes & ice cream) to fill you up; not to mention a great tea selection, wonderful coffees and deadly good hot chocolate. Give your holiday shopping a rest, kick back and relax and come out and Support Philly Local Music.

NEWS! Talisman has just been invited to play an Acoustic Music Showcase in Bucks County in early January. We'll pass on the details shortly.
All in all, it was a wonderful year and we would like to take the time to whole heartedly thank everyone for such terrific support and enthusiasm - particularly: Karen, Norma, Pamela, Rich, Miryam, Judi & Jim, KC and our families.
We hope your winter solstice was a happy one and sincerely wish you all a jubilant holiday season!
Peace on earth -

Marathon practice in the rain and the Gizmo revealed...
I don't know how the weather is where you are but I hear that Ark sales are going through the roof here in the Delaware Valley. What a gloriously soggy day. It was, in fact, a perfect day to be locked in the barn with my favorite guitar player and drummer and work non-stop all afternoon on our latest song Walk Away. We really ironed out the arrangement (now to just commit it all to memory :-) and it has definitely taken strong shape. I think we are moving towards being a Rock Acoustic band instead of an Acoustic Rock band.
ALTERNATE TUNINGS & THE GIZMO
The funniest part of the whole day (much to my great joy) is that in 13 years of knowing Jim Nichols (our amazing guitar player) he has never played an alternate tuning. All good things come to he who waits... Some of you may be aware of my penchant for never keeping a guitar in standard EBGDAE tuning and the level of craziness I have put my band mates through with my constant need to tune, retune, tune again...
Well, that problem was solved when Jim convinced me to hang up my acoustic guitar and move to an electric equipped with a guitar synthesizer (Roland VG99), which I immediately affectionately dubbed as The Gizmo since I had a real mental block remembering the actual name. Anyway, so now I find myself, a die-hard acoustic rock chick slinging around an 8lb electic guitar and switching between crunchy (love the crunchy) guitar sounds and my beloved alternate acoustic tunings on my gizmo.
SO - it was only fitting for me to have a moment of complete and utter joy when my purist guitar player dropped his low E string to D for the new song. I think I had my mouth gaping for a full 5 minutes. By the way - it sounds AWESOME.
I'm OK living in a world where I'm playing an electric guitar if it contains Jim playing an alternate tuning (even if it only is a drop D. Hey - it's a start). At any rate - look for the new song. It will kick your ass to the other side of the country it rocks so good.
That's the good word from Talisman today.
Peace out and stay warm, dry and cozy -

ReverbNation, Laura Shay and Sam Adams Winter Lager...
Well the holiday season is officially kicked off! I hope all had a safe and happy Thanksgiving and didn't spend too much on Black Friday. We've added another site to our online community.

Check out ReverbNation What is ReverbNation? Well, it's like the best of all social networking rolled into one. It allows me to go to our blog site at blogger.com and update our blog which then filters down into our FaceBook page and our ReverbNation page automatically. This also works for our Twitter acoount too! We update Twitter and it shows up on ReverbNation! All of our MySpace friends also have are accessible via ReverbNation. We've also uploaded some songs (including a ReverbNation exclusive) and some pictures (more to come). It's pretty cool. Check it out if you are so inclined.
Tonight, I'm off to Espresso Yourself on Frankford Avenue in Philadelphia PA to see Philadelphia powerhouse Laura Shay, who is a less eccentric and equally talented version of Tori Amos. Show starts at 9pm.I'm also taste testing the first of this years batch of Sam Adams Winter Lager.
So far it tastes terrific, though more random sampling will be necessary in order to make a final conclusion. Will keep you posted.Be warm. Be smart. Be good. Believe.
peace out -

Thanks and Shhh
Thank you for a really successful show at John and Peters in New Hope again! We'll be back there in the spring I am sure. We really do like playing there. The coolest thing ever was having both my old college roommate and her husband show up AND my gal pals from my old following-the-Indigo-Girls-around days surprising me! I hadn't seen some of those gals in nearly 15 years. One even came all the way from Vermont. That meant A LOT. Way cool.
We're working on some new material (yes, I have a new song - or three) that we'll roll out in the spring and continuing to hone our live show. Hopefully, if you haven't been Talismanized you will soon :-)
Special thanks to all the Talismaniacs that made it a great show and also to the special appearance by the group Brain Ladel. (love you guys)
Shhh - Lead singer "C" of Talisman will be making a surprise appearance tonight - Tuesday - 11/25 at the open mike at Espresso Yourself on Frankford Ave in Phila, PA
- peace out

The Next Big Sound & CD Release Show Saturday

The Next Big Sound
Have you checked out this cool website yet?
It's a very different type of site. The concept is that you play the role of a mogul by creating your own label and signing the artists you think will become famous.
Listen to great unsigned music. You'll be the first to hear the best up-and-coming music on the web. When a single catches your ear, check out the rest of the artist’s demo by clicking their name.
Sign the artists you love. When you find an artist you are excited about, register free as a mogul and sign them to your own personal record label.
Manage your roster of artists. Add and replace artists as you discover the most promising new talent. Your score will rise as the artists on your label become increasingly popular.
So sign up and start your own label. We'd love to be your first "signed" artist. Click HERE for our direct link to our Next Big Sound page.

Also - this Saturday is a CD Release Show for "The Wicked World's Come of Age" at John & Peter's in New Hope starting at 3pm. We'll be playing the album in its entirety followed by a set of old favorites and new material. Click HERE for directions.
John & Peter's is no longer an "all ages" club during the day. Their website states that "John & Peter's is a smoking establishent. Due to state law, no persons under the age of 18 are permitted inside the building at any time." Please be aware of this change.
Come out and get some early holiday shopping done in historic, beautiful New Hope and then have a cold one and some great grub (they do have good food) and listen to us rock out.
Peace out -

Rocking PUCK LIVE - CD Release Show #1

Talisman the band is proud to have played our first CD release party at the prestigious Puck Live club in Doylestown, PA. To think that we headlined on a stage where other international, national and local acts such as: Graham Parker, Robert Hazard, Susan Werner, Jeffrey Gaines, Ben Arnold, Christine Havrilla, Grey Eye Glances, Sister Blue, Lauren Hart, Jim Boggia, Joseph Parsons, Vienna Teng, Sophie B. Hawkins, Richie Havens, Mark Hudson, Ellis Paul, Craig Bickhardt, Lisa Bouchelle, and Michelle Malone performed - is quite amazing when you realize how short our journey has been (this time around :-)! It's pretty hard to believe that this was only our second show in the past 11 years and we found ourselves in such a respected venue; talk about feeling good!

We had two terrific opening acts, Dana Alexandra and Dave Doobinin. Both were original artists - Dana was solo and commanded the stage while Dave Doobinin had the tremendously tight support of his band. Both WOWED everyone within earshot. Talisman the band was truly fortunate to be among such talent. It set a great tone for the night.
We ended up going on an hour later then anticipated but the energy of the evening kept us moving at a brisk pace. I think all of us were surprised when it was time for the evening to wrap up! We were still raring to go!

Since it was our first time on the Puck Live stage - we really weren't sure what to expect. Well, any expectations we could have had were surpassed. It was an incredibly professional experience and much kudos and thanks go to the entire Puck Live staff - particularly Mike Lightkep for a great job with sound. All in all - a great night was had and we're looking forward to many more.
See more pictures from the show HERE.
Peace -C

How I stumbled into guitar playing...

Some of you know, but probably more of you don't know about my recent transition into the world of electric guitar. It is an interesting journey.
I started playing guitar in my early 20's after becoming incredibly enamored with the music of Indigo Girls - Amy Ray and Emily Saliers. I had played piano since age 5 and had lessons through age 15 and had never had particular interest in plucking the steel strings. However, my parents had relocated to Florida after retirement and I was dwelling in a condo that definitely could not accommodate a piano. Thus - my piano moved to Florida without me. I lasted about a month without some sort of musical outlet and my roommate wanted to upgrade his guitar so I bought it from him. I didn't know how to hold it, much less play it.
So, fueled by my desire to make music and my new found love of acoustic folk-rock - I set out to give myself blisters on my fingertips and might I say - I did quite a fine job of it. I remember all too well of many sore fingers that made my day job which involved a great deal of typing quite challenging. However, my need to make music outweighed the inconvenient pain.
I soon met up with other acoustic rock fans and learned about interesting things like alternate tunings and capos and my least favorite thing about the instrument - breaking strings - followed by my second least favorite thing about the instrument - restringing guitars. Strings, blisters, whatever - nothing was going to make me stop. I played on and before I knew it, I bought another guitar and then a 12-string.
All was well with my acoustic world until Jim Nichols (guitar player for Talisman the band) rocked my world by introducing me to the gizmo. More on that later...
